Profile of the Association
The establishment of Tomorrows Schools in 1989 reinforced the need for a senior manager to take day-to-day responsibility for the finances, property and human resources within secondary schools.
Many colleges and high schools appointed qualified professionals to form part of the management structure and to look after those non-curriculum areas, allowing the educational administrators to focus on the core business of schools.E/O's can be involved in a number of different facets of school administration including:
- the financial well-being of schools including the preparation of budgets, annual reports, financial advice, investments and liaison with auditors
- management of resources and assets including purchasing, repairing and maintaining
- oversight of property matters including involvement with development plans and 10 year maintenance plans
- management of human resources including recruitment, contract interpretation, appraisals and team building
- development of Information Technology and its ongoing integration into schools
- advice on legal, health and safety and insurance
- hostel operations including catering, maintenance and personnel
- working with Boards of Trustees and assistance with strategic planning and subsequent implementation.
As time progressed, the need for a unifying body to provide support, networking and guidance became apparent and in 1993, the national association was formed. The aims and objectives of the organisation are:
- To promote the development of E/O's skills, qualifications and leadership
- To improve opportunities for the professional and personal development of E/O's
- To promote continuous improvement and development of school administration
- To uphold the value of professional management in school administration
- To ensure that the collective views and opinions of E/O's are canvassed and heard nationally on matters of professional significance
- To publish and circulate bulletins and newsletters presenting the ideas and opinions of members and others on professional matters
- To conduct and initiate such research and studies as may assist in attaining any of these aims and objectives
- To provide a forum for the exchange of ideas among E/O's and other interested persons
- To encourage co-operation and fellowship among E/O's
- To provide professional support and advice to members
- To be presented on all appropriate bodies
- To collaborate with other organisations having similar aims and objectives
- To foster liaison and support between regions of the association
- To promote a sense of common cause amongst all secondary school administrative and support staff.
Our magazine carries articles that help in many of these areas, and goes regularly to all members. Read from the magazine archives.
Today, E/Os provide a vital link in the smooth and business-like management of secondary schools. Professional development is a key aspect of this. The Association runs annual conferences and funding dedicated to regional branches. Strategic planning encompasses all aspects of the E/O's work. Alliances have been formed with other key educational sector groups and as well as suppliers and contractors.
Current development is focused on raising awareness of the EO's role in schools and the contribution that they make.Fill in a membership form and join us.
